Opportunities and risks

Climate change confronts GAZ-SYSTEM with the necessity to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through the decarbonisation of power generation. As a natural gas transmission infrastructure operator, the Company faces the challenge of adapting its services and investment projects to the changing energy landscape.

The Polish energy mix is set to replace coal with natural gas, thus contributing to halving CO2 emissions. However, this will involve an increasing demand for gas in the energy sector. Nevertheless, this will be a temporary solution only, as the targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are much more stringent. Compared to 1990, the European Union target is 55% in 2030, 90% in 2040 and net zero in 2050. Therefore, the risks and opportunities for GAZ-SYSTEM include maintaining transmission capacity during a period of uncertain but potentially increasing natural gas consumption, while preparing the infrastructure for a future decline. The key determinants include the transmission services market for 'green’ energy carriers such as hydrogen, ammonia or biomethane, and the possibility of adapting the existing facilities or alternatively
their decommissioning.

With its infrastructure, knowledge and experience, the Company can play a key role in the construction of a transmission and storage system for green fuels, should such a market with sufficient demand emerge. Valuable prospects lie at the interface between risks and opportunities, where GAZ-SYSTEM can be a key player in the energy transition.
